Tips & Tricks: Bringing Customer Personas & Smarter Structure Into Your Training
In this Tips & Tricks session, Gaurav Kapadia, Implementation Manager at SymTrain, walked attendees through how to use Customer Personas and AI Voices to bring simulations to life. He also covered how to organize content more efficiently using Modules and how to create stronger, more structured learning paths with Training Plans. The session focused on improving realism, consistency, and scalability, from creation to delivery.
In this edition of Tips & Tricks, we’ll cover:
- Why these capabilities matter
- A deeper look at Personas, Modules & Training Plans
- How to apply these tips in your own workflow
- And more!
Why These Capabilities Matter
Real customer interactions vary dramatically. Tone, urgency, attitude, and communication style all shift from one caller to another. To prepare agents realistically, simulations must reflect that complexity.
These features matter because they help you:
- Train agents on multiple customer types, not just polite or neutral ones
- Build more immersive simulations that feel like real calls
- Organize large libraries of syms without confusion or clutter
- Standardize performance expectations across teams
- Accelerate onboarding by giving trainees structured, sequenced learning paths
In short: customer personas create realism, and modules + training plans create structure.
A Deeper Look
1. Customer Personas: AI Voices That Adapt to the Scenario
Take one Sym and instantly generate multiple versions of it using AI-powered customer personas.
What you can do now:
- Choose from 8 distinct customer personas (direct, angry, friendly, etc.)
- Instantly regenerate customer audio using the same script
- Use personas across both Audio Syms, Chat, Visual + Chat and Visual + Audio Syms
- Customize responses after generation if needed
- Compare trainee reactions to different customer tones
These persona-driven interactions help agents build confidence and adaptability.
2. Faster Content Building With Modules
Instead of assigning Syms one-by-one, creators can now combine them into organized, reusable modules.
Module capabilities highlighted:
- Group Syms for a single topic (e.g., normal, angry & direct phone upgrade calls)
- Drag-and-drop to reorder Syms
- Add module labels (e.g., “2025”) for fast filtering
- Assign a full module at once saving hours of manual assignment work
Modules simplify organization and improve trainee navigation.
3. Better Structure With Training Plans
Training Plans allow creators and managers to build assessments, guided learning paths, and standardized success criteria.
Key features demonstrated:
- Add Syms or entire Modules into a Training Plan
- Enable sequential completion
- Set “Successful Test Attempts Required”
- Set Max Allowed Test Attempts
- Use Sym Accuracy Score (Low / Medium / High)
- Define Keyword Score & Click Score thresholds
- Customize practice mode (unlimited, prerequisite number, or disabled)
Training Plans let you convert simulations into true performance checkpoints.
How to Use
1. Build Multi-Persona Training for Real-World Preparedness
Take one commonly used Sym (like billing or dispute handling), and generate direct, angry, and neutral versions.
Assign them together in a module so trainees experience variety.
2. Use Modules to Keep Training Organized
Group Syms by topic or difficulty level:
- “Billing Calls – Level 1”
- “Escalations – Angry Customers”
- “Retention – Save the Customer”
Add labels to keep teams aligned on what belongs where.
3. Build Training Plans as Tollgate Assessments
For structured learning:
- Require sequential completion to build skills progressively
- Require practice twice before testing
- Set success criteria (high accuracy, 80–90% keyword & click score)
- Limit attempts to reinforce accountability
A Real-World Example
A leading telecommunications customer recently used these tools to prepare agents for all customer types. They took their standard “Phone Upgrade Scenario” and created: Normal tone, Direct tone, and Angry tone, grouping all three into one module and added it to a Training Plan with medium-to-high success criteria. Trainees reported the simulations felt exactly like live calls, and the training team saw: Faster agent readiness, higher confidence in handling escalations, and greater retention of communication skills.
Pro Tip
When generating persona-based Syms: Start with the “neutral” version first.
Perfect the script, then use AI personas to generate variations instantly.
This ensures consistency in: content, flow, scoring, scenario logic, and cuts creation time by 60–70%.
